After a slow start to his Geelong career, a positional switch could help former North Melbourne forward Aaron Black reignite his career. Black was thrown down back in Geelong’s come from behind 19-point win over Footscray in the VFL on Saturday.
The 27-year-old played four games in his first season at the Cats, kicking five goals, but was forced out of the side, with the Cats favouring the youth of Wylie Buzza.
With fellow talls Buzza, Stewart Crameri and Esava Ratugolea being favoured to partner Tom Hawkins up forward, Black needed to try something to get the eye of the selectors again.
With Geelong being light-on for key defenders, Black’s ability to play down back on a permanent basis or being able to play as a swingman could be fruitful for both himself and the club.
Speaking to the Geelong Advertiser, Geelong VFL Coach Shane O’Bree believes that Black could become a ‘very good swingman for us’.
“He obviously reads the play really well, so he might be a chance to play a little bit of game time down there over the next couple of weeks to have a look at him and add that string to his bow” said O’Bree.
Black enjoyed a career best season for North Melbourne in 2013, playing 18 games and kicking 33 goals. He then backed it up with a 26-goal season in 2014, before injuries struck, restricting him to seven games in three seasons.
The Geelong VFL team will take on the Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Saturday night, while the AFL side host Sydney on Saturday afternoon at GMHBA Stadium.
