GEELONG will have a strong contingent of Cats attending this year’s Brownlow Medal, with a league-high seven players invited to attend football’s night of nights.
All-Australians Tom Stewart and Patrick Dangerfield will be joined by past winner Gary Ablett and strong 2018 performers Mark Blicavs, Mitch Duncan, Tim Kelly and Joel Selwood.
Tom Hawkins is the one ineligible Cat in this year’s count, having missed round eight after being suspended for one match for making contact with an umpire.
Richmond has the next highest number of invitees with six Tigers making the list. Clubs are asked to provide a guest list of four players, plus the club's captain and any previous past winners of the prestigious medal.
Gold Coast captain Tom Lynch is not on the invite list after asking for a trade from the Suns, meaning he is the only captain not on the list.
Docker Luke Ryan, Demon Jake Melksham, Sun Lachie Weller and Saint Jack Steele were amongst a host of young and breakout players to also gain an invite.
The Cats had a number of strong performers across the year despite a disappointing end to the season, with Patrick Dangerfield making his sixth All-Australian team and being named vice-captain, while Tom Stewart made his first team.
Gary Ablett won the 13th most ball in the competition on average, while Mark Blicavs thrived after a move into defence.
The utility found a home at full back, conceding just three goals in 388 minutes opposed to Jack Riewoldt, Ben Brown, Tom Lynch, Taylor Walker and Jesse Hogan.
Joel Selwood and Mitch Duncan were the Cats third and fourth highest ball-winners respectively, both averaging over 25 touches a game.
