Three Cats nominated for AFLPA MVP
Joel Selwood, Harry Taylor and Corey Enright will be the Cats hopes to take out the AFLPA MVP award
The Leigh Matthews Trophy, proudly presented by Be the Influence, remains the only peer-voted award in the AFL industry and recognises qualities such as versatility, ability to perform under pressure, leadership and courage.
Taylor remains one of the competition’s best key defenders, but in 2013 has added another string to his bow. The 27-year-old Cat has shown he’s more than capable of playing as a key forward when required; Taylor kicked five goals in the Round 5 win over the Western Bulldogs.
One of Geelong’s most-loved players, Enright has had another sterling season, averaging 22 possessions and seven marks per match. The veteran is showing no signs of slowing down, and looks likely to venture into a 14th season at Geelong in 2014.
Skipper Joel Selwood has had another brilliant year, inspiring teammates with his courage each week and more often than not leading them to victory. Selwood’s unflinching approach will hold him in good stead for another finals campaign – this September could see him win a fourth premiership in just his seventh AFL season.
As part of the AFL Players’ Association awards, Selwood has also been nominated for the Robert Rose Most Courageous Award, presented by Fire Ready Victoria, and will compete with skippers of the 17 other clubs for the Best Captain, presented by L’Oreal Men Expert.
Youngster Jackson Thurlow is in the running for the ‘Best First Year Player, presented by Be the Influence.
The MVP voting is a two-stage process; beginning with each player voting for the three teammates he considers to have been the most valuable this season.
Each club’s votes are then tallied to form a nomination list comprising 54 players across the 18 teams.
Then, in the second round of voting, all AFL players choose from the list of 51 nominees to determine who will be the MVP (they cannot vote for players from their own team in the second round).
The 2013 Be The Influence AFL Players’ MVP Award Winners will be announced on Tuesday September 10 at the Peninsula, Docklands.
The event will be covered live on Fox Footy from 9.30PM.
