GEELONG will put plenty of time and energy into quelling Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell in next Friday night's qualifying final.

Although Cats coach Chris Scott was loath to give details, he conceded former West Coast midfielder Scott Selwood was a potential opponent for Mitchell.

Selwood made his name as a run-with player in 135 games with the Eagles before he joined his brother Joel at the Cats during last year's free agency period.

He has played just three senior games but will miss this Saturday's VFL match despite being eligible, to ensure he has recovered from hamstring tightness if the Cats want to play him on Mitchell.

"If Scott plays he'd be a candidate obviously, but we have seen many teams go with lots of methods against Sam and not many of them have worked," Scott said on Wednesday.

"We have got a lot of respect for him (Mitchell) as a player and what he means to their team and he is a proven performer on the big stage so he'll take up a bit of our time."

The most recent time Mitchell played against the Cats in a final was the 2014 qualifying final when he picked up 36 touches.

He also played a critical role in helping the Hawks overcome Geelong in the last quarter of the 2013 preliminary final.

Joel Selwood conceded it would be special to play alongside his brother in a final, but said the only thing the 26-year-old former Eagle needed to concern himself with was being ready to perform if picked.

The skipper said he had dreamed of holding the premiership cup aloft as Geelong captain since he was about three or four years old, as he grew up in Bendigo barracking for the Cats.

"It would mean a lot to me but there are plenty of steps still to take," Selwood said. 

Selwood, who has played well in 2016 despite an interrupted pre-season, said he had enjoyed the re-emergence of the Cats this season and the club had been a fun place to be around.

Scott said the early signs on Lachie Henderson's availability were positive but if he didn't play in the first week of the finals he was hopeful the defender would be available the following week.

Henderson had a procedure last week after feeling a clicking in the back of his knee after the round 22 game against the Brisbane Lions.

He was forced to miss last week's game against Melbourne.

Scott said the job of picking the team was not getting any easier with the Cats having most of their list available.
