2. Round 6, 2008, Domain Stadium: Geelong 13.11 (89) def Fremantle 13.10 (88)
The Mark Thompson-coached Cats were the reigning premiers and were undefeated when they headed west to take on the Mark Harvey-led Dockers. It was a see-sawing contest. Freo led by 17 points at quarter-time, then Geelong fought back to trail by just two points at the main change. The game turned again in the third term, with the Cats failing to kick a goal and falling 25 points behind by three-quarter time. But Geelong fought back, kicking five goals to one and edging two points in front with just a couple of minutes to play. Matthew Pavlich had the chance to win the game for the Dockers with a late shot, but he hit the post and the Cats won by the narrowest of margins.

The Cats were under the leadership of Gary Ayres, while Freo was in just its second season in the AFL and was under the guidance of Gerard Neesham. With Brenton Sanderson, Peter Riccardi and Garry Hocking winning plenty of the ball, Geelong was 47 points up at the last change. 4. Qualifying final, 2013, Simonds Stadium: Fremantle 12.15 (87) def Geelong 9.18 (72)
This was a famous day in the Cats' history, as the club hosted its first final in Geelong since 1897. And the home side made a bright start. Steve Johnson was on fire with two early goals as the Cats grabbed a 13-point quarter-time lead. From there, however, the Ross Lyon-coached Dockers played the role of party poopers to perfection. Ryan Crowley, who had started on Mathew Stokes, shut Johnson out of the game, while Michael Barlow (32 disposals and three goals) produced a dazzling midfield display. Freo kicked 10 goals to five in the last three quarters and prevailed by 15 points, in the process earning a home preliminary final.

5. Round 1, 2012, Domain Stadium: Fremantle 16.9 (105) def Geelong 15.11 (101)
Freo started its first game under Ross Lyon in blistering fashion, with big man Zac Clarke in the thick of the action as the home side booted the first five goals. But the Cats, who were the reigning premiers, fought back strongly in what became a very heated contest. Matthew Scarlett whacked Hayden Ballantyne on the chin early in the second half as the game boiled over (Scarlett later copped a three-match suspension), yet the Cats held their nerve, hitting the front late in the third quarter. However, Freo prevailed in a classic finish, with Matthew Pavlich soccering through the sealing goal.
