Too close for comfort?
James Kelly and Scott Gullan speak about Steve Johnson's latest suspension on Argue the Toss
Cats TV asked James Kelly and journalist Scott Gullan whether they felt Steve Johnson was hovering too close to the edge after receiving his fourth suspension in 13 games?
Kelly admits Johnson, who will miss his third game in four weeks, needs to be more conscientious of his actions during play.
As a close teammate, Kelly felt it was necessary to tell Johnson that he was protruding too far over the line and his on-field actions needed to change.
“I think he’s a bit close to the edge personally and it’s something that I’ve said to Steve,” Kelly said.
Kelly confirms that Johnson’s impetuous behaviour affects the team as much as it affects him.
“It’s one of those things where it’s a really fine line, we love the way he plays and we love him playing on the edge but when he’s playing really well it’s great and then when things like that happen everyone instantly gets disappointed.”
Gullan believes Johnson’s knee to Nathan Jones chest was a mild incident, however he feels Johnson has no excuse as a senior and skillful player to be committing such reckless acts.
“I don’t think he should miss a game of footy for what he did but we have to live with this point system and all the players know that,” Gullan said.
“He’s a skilled and hard footballer but the little niggling things are just childish and he just shouldn’t do it.”
