GEELONG'S midfield performance without Joel Selwood last week has opened up the possibility of the Cats' captain spending more time forward in the back end of the season.
Although Cats' coach Chris Scott said Selwood's best position was in the middle "in the heat of the action", he conceded other options were available as the team developed more players who could play as inside midfielders.
"We feel as though we've got now a much bigger group than that that can go through there [as inside midfielders]. We're not envisaging that he will play 100 per cent in that position. The options have opened up a little bit," Scott said.
"If we had two of him, we'd play one forward. I think that is a reasonable indication to the way we are thinking."
Selwood has kicked nine goals in 13 games this season after kicking 24 goals in 2014 and 30 in 2013.
The captain's longevity – he has missed just one game since 2012 – is in stark contrast to a trio of players who will play for Geelong's VFL side this weekend.
Daniel Menzel, Nathan Vardy and Josh Cowan have combined for only 13 senior games between them since 2011. Menzel will play his third VFL game in succession on Saturday, Vardy his first for the season, and Cowan his first since he broke down in round six against Collingwood.
The trio have not played in the same team together since round 11, 2011 when the Cats played the Western Bulldogs at Simonds Stadium (Selwood has played 94 since then), and last played VFL together in round 13, 2010, more than five years ago.
Geelong selected all three players in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft.
Scott said he would be happy for Vardy to run around unscathed without getting a kick, and for Menzel to complete his third game on the trot.
Geelong's VFL side plays Essendon on Saturday at Simonds Stadium at 11am.
