Looking through the History Books: Geelong’s amazing comeback

If Geelong ever needed a reminder that it is possible to win at the SCG, the last quarter from round 21 1987 against Sydney is the perfect place to start.

At the start of the round, Geelong sat percentage inside the top five and needed to win to stay inside the five.

Sydney looked a sure thing to win after dominating the first three quarters, kicking five goals in each of the opening three quarters to hold a 27-point lead at three quarter time.

Geelong kicked the last six goals of the game to snatch victory, although inaccuracy in front of goal almost cost the Cats.

The Cats kicked eight behinds in the last term, which included an easy miss from Gavin Exell from 10m out almost directly in front.

The run of the last six goals was started by a nice Andrew Bews goal 17 minutes into the last term.

The highlight of the last quarter however, was a monster 70 metre kick from Bruce Lindner from the centre square which put the Cats back within two goals of the Swans.

Geelong claimed a nine-point win to hold their spot inside the five, however, a loss to Hawthorn in round 22 saw that Cats slip out of the finals.
