Geelong recorded its first win of the season and highest ever AFLW score in an impressive outing against Richmond in Bendigo on Saturday afternoon. Here is a look at some of the key moments from the 22-point victory.
Geelong shine in dominant second quarter
The Cats held a narrow two-point lead at the first break after a high-quality opening quarter. It was a brilliant six goal second term that set Geelong up for victory, as the Cats went into the main break with a 27-point lead after displaying impressive transition work across the ground. Renee Garing’s goal in the final minutes of the term also saw the Cats break its record for its highest AFLW score, showcasing the work that Geelong has done to impact the scoreboard after struggling at times during the start of the season.
Team effort rewarded
There were eight goalkickers for the Cats, as the visitors displayed a great level of synergy across the ground. Kate Darby kicked the opening goal of the match in her first game of the season, while Julia Crockett-Grills, Anna Teague and Renee Garing all kicked their first AFLW goals. The Cats had struggled to find inside 50s in the opening rounds of the season but won this count against the Tigers, ending the game with 33 to 18.
Cats remained composed
Richmond kicked four consecutive goals in the third quarter to narrow Geelong’s lead to 18-points at the final break, as the home side looked to continue their comeback in the final term. The Cats weren’t deterred however, as Julia Crockett-Grills kicked the only goal of the quarter to seal her team’s victory. Meg McDonald was at her best in the backline, with her intercept marking on the last line of defence steadying the Cats in an intense final term.
Purcell continues impressive form
Olivia Purcell continued her standout season, with the young star recording 20 disposals, four tackles and one goal in another dominant display.
There were a number of impressive performers for Geelong, with Rocky Cranston (two goals, 15 disposals), Phoebe McWilliams (13 disposals, 4 marks), Meg McDonald (16 disposals, six marks) and Amy McDonald (12 disposals, 4 tackles) all enjoying strong outings.
Next up: Gold Coast
Geelong hit the road again next week and will look to continue its strong form against the Gold Coast in Mackay on Friday night.
