The first instalment of our new “Yes or No” feature series saw geelongcats.com.au writers Adam McNichol and Mitch Broughton debate whether all Geelong home games should be played at Simonds Stadium.
The response was overwhelming – with more than 700 comments on Facebook and many more across Twitter demonstrating just how close the issue is to the hearts and minds of our supporters.
At latest count, 62% of votes were in favour of all Cats home games being played at Simonds Stadium whilst 38% disagreed.
On behalf of the majority, we took these results and the many passionate responses to Cats chief commercial officer Justin Reeves who says the voice of the supporter needs to be heard when shaping the future of our club.
“As part of our commitment to our members and supporters, we will base all of our big decisions on research and insights,” Reeves said.
“On this issue, we will continue to ask our members and supporters for their preference around the mix of games between Simonds Stadium and the MCG.”
“It’s important that we get that mix right.”
Reeves acknowledged the feedback thus far sends a clear message.
“One of the common themes that we get from our members at the moment is that they don’t enjoy us playing at Etihad Stadium – but there are a certain element who do enjoy and expect the Cats playing at the MCG,” Reeves said.
“Our current feedback tells us that the best mix for us is nine games at Simonds Stadium and two blockbuster games at the MCG.”
“That’s where we’re looking to get to once the Simonds Stadium redevelopment is in place and that’s what we will be discussing with the AFL.”
The Cats will play eight home games at Simonds Stadium in the 2016 home and away season.
