Did you know Geelong Cats players and coaches have already completed over 700 appearances this year for membership, sponsorship, corporate and community? Our most valuable assets, the players themselves, continue to engage, inspire and connect with a diverse range of people from big business to politicians to young refugees to workers in factories– and all can’t help but become enthusiastic Cats fans after spending time with our players!
Here’s a snapshot of what they’ve been up to out and about in our community over the past three weeks.
Starlight Express Room visit
Josh Hunt and Hamish McIntosh last week visited the Starlight Room at the Royal Children’s and were involved in a ‘Create-A-Sport’ workshop. Josh and Hamish along with the patients, came up with the rules, playing field, and uniforms for the new sport and then played the game between the patients and players. They then went to visit some very special kids on the wards.
Geelong Cats celebrate NAIDOC Week
The Geelong Cats NAIDOC Week celebrations kicked off with a local launch of the Geelong Cats Reconciliation Action Plan. Colin Carter, local artist BJ O’Toole and Mathew Stokes performed the flag raising ceremony, raising the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, which is the first time they have been flown at Simonds Stadium together with the Australian Flag. The event also included a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony performed by David Tournier of the Wathaurong Cooperative.
Celebrating the AFL’s multicultural round, Podsiadly, Stokes and Eardley visited Geelong’s Diversitat last week where they toured the new facilities then participated in a clinic with over 100 kids from various backgrounds including refuges from Sudan, Afghanistan, Burma and Eastern Europe. Even though most of the kids only spoke basic English, many wore Cats jumpers and all listened in awe to the players speak about their multicultural backgrounds.
Around 800 eager young Cats fans flocked to Simonds Stadium last week for some school holiday fun as they took part in the club’s Junior Members Clinic. Soaking up the winter sun, the kids took part in marking, kicking and handball drills for two hours on the Simonds Stadium turf.
Schools Visit
An overwhelming response from schools in the Geelong region for a visit by Geelong Cats, saw 42 players visit 79 high schools and primary schools this week. The players participated in clinics, gave talks on leadership and good health, posed for lots of photos and signed countless items of Geelong Cats paraphernalia. Fantastic feedback has been flowing in from schools and players alike!
Jordan Schroder and Lincoln McCarthy headed down to the Barwon River earlier this month to help promote Cats community partner Give Where You Live’s annual Riverfest Rowing Regatta (formally the Corporate Head of the River), which is being held in October.
