Senior coach Chris Scott confirms that the Cats will be welcoming a few more youngsters into their AFL list next year on Tweet the Coach.

Scott believes both, Jordan Schroder, who was named VFL’s Best and Fairest this season, and Shane Kersten, will be asked to step up and perform on the bigger stage in 2014.

He says they’re both up for the challenge, however, due to various circumstances they haven’t been able to get them out there this year.

“Yeah we do, and Jordan Schroder winning the Liston Trophy last night was a fitting acknowledgement for the season he’s had in our VFL team,” Scott said.

“Unfortunately he has found it hard to cement a spot in our AFL side, there are some good players in front of him but we see him playing a lot of AFL football, not only next year but into the future as well.”

The brawny forward from Western Australia, Shane Kersten, was on the verge of making his debut several times this year but injury kept him sidelined.

“Shane Kersten has been a bit unfortunate this year, he’s been right on the edge of our AFL team probably three or four times this year and has been cruelled by injury at the last minute,” Scott said.

“He’s had a solid season in the VFL and he’s a proven goal kicker at that level and we think he has the attributes to step up and play in our AFL team next year, so there are some exciting young players coming through.”

Last time the Cats met the Dockers they were missing their 211cm ruckman, Aaron Sandlilands, but this Saturday he’ll be in full swing.

The three-time-All-Australian will add another trick to the Dockers’ game, although, Scott believes the Cats have the strength to combat Fremantle's force in other areas of play.

“They do change marginally we need to work a little bit harder on what we do if we don’t get our hands on the ball in the ruck, and that’s the likelihood when Sandilands is in there,” Scott explained.

“They have a few variations as well, perhaps we need to be a little bit more defensive acknowledging that he’s going to get his hands on to it a little bit.

“It’s not only the stoppages it’s the work around the ground in transition is something we need to think through and mitigate his strength and somehow see if we can get an advantage in other areas.”
