This week Cats TV asked Tom Lonergan and Hamish McIntosh what Geelong will do to combat Port Adelaide’s leg speed at Friday night’s sudden-death final at the MCG?

Despite Geelong’s two defeats over Port Adelaide this year, Lonergan says the finals create a completely different contest and their previous performance doesn’t mean anything. Particularly against a team who are fit and developing quickly.

“They’ve been well documented how fit they are and they’ve got Darren Burgess (High performance trainer) in from Liverpool. He’s obviously trained them up and got them really fit and they have a first class coach in Kenny Hinkley who knows the game back to front,” Lonergan said.

“I’m sure Hinkley will be gearing the boys up and making sure they come out firing against us.

“We have had some success over them this year but I think that means nothing going into Friday night.”

Port Adelaide, who are the third youngest team in the AFL, have had an extraordinary season, having come from the bottom end of the ladder the year before with only five wins to this year’s Semi Final.

The Cats know that Port Adelaide are a new and firing team that have the endurance to cause havoc on Friday night.

“They have a couple of strengths; one they just seem to be playing as a unit, they don’t really have too many stand out players,” McIntosh said.

“They’re just playing with a lot of heart and you can see every week they’re attacking the contest and they have no fear and don’t really care who they’re up against.

“I guess one of their main strengths would have to be their midfield with (Oliver) Wines, (Chad) Wingard, and (Travis) Boak and those guys. They’re young energetic and they could be anything in the future, so that’s going to be a key area to stop on the weekend.”
