Coleman Medallist Tom Hawkins will reflect on his individual accolades at the end of the year, but for now he’s focused on team success.
Only six days remain until the Cats take on the Power in the first qualifying final at Adelaide Oval.
“As everyone knows the hard work starts now, the real challenges are in front of us and we think we are capable,” Hawkins said.
Hawkins’ focus is very much on the present and he believes the entire list has an important role to play during the finals campaign.
“For me personally I just look forward to the challenge ahead, there is no point dwelling on what has been.”
“Internally we see our list as being deeper than just some senior players, and that’s right across the board from our first-year players right through to Gary (Ablett).”
“We have each got a role to play and that includes the guys that aren’t playing in the senior side – their role is arguably the most important to prepare us to play Port Adelaide and whatever is in front of that.”
Last time Geelong met Port Adelaide in Round 12 the Cats recorded a 60-point win with Hawkins starring in attack with six-goals.
The Cats will take confidence from that performance but know Port Adelaide will be a far tougher opponent this time around.
“I think it will different. We played really well as a collective, our midfield was outstanding, our defenders were really solid and did a wonderful job playing on Charlie (Dixon) and the rest of their forwardline that are pretty dynamic.
“We take confidence from that, but they were really impressive (on Monday).
“I thought they were really good around the ball and they were dangerous the way they moved the ball forward.”
“We will take confidence from what we have done, but it is going to be a different venue and there will be a lot of different parts of the game.”
Geelong’s qualifying final clash will take place at Adelaide Oval on Thursday 1 October with the first bounce at 7.40pm AEST.
