ONLY a major mishap will force Geelong captain Joel Selwood out of Saturday night's semi-final against Collingwood, according to superstar teammate Patrick Dangerfield.

Selwood had surgery on Friday night to "stabilise" the middle finger on his left hand he dislocated in Geelong's qualifying final loss to Port Adelaide.

The skipper trained lightly on Monday but will undergo a more rigorous fitness test at training on Friday.

"Unless his leg was cut off, I reckon he'll be out there," Dangerfield said in relation to Selwood when speaking on Wednesday.

"We haven't trained yet, but unless you run him over in a car on the way back, I would very much expect the skipper to be leading the way come Saturday night."

Dangerfield also conceded the Cats needed to better "grasp" key moments in front of goal after finishing with 5.12 against the Power, including 0.5 from Coleman medallist Tom Hawkins.

He also defended the Cats' finals record that stands at 4-12 since the 2011 premiership and 3-7 in Dangerfield's five years at the club. 

"Whilst there's a pattern and we'd like to have won more finals than we have, we're still playing finals every year," he said.

"We could bomb out, like a few do, and then return in five years or we could compete every year.

"That's what this team has shown under Chris and under the players that are involved.

"Every season is different. We had some (finals) where we just weren't good enough and got blown out of the water, but I don't think that was necessarily the case on the weekend."

Dangerfield also announced that AFL players would be donating their allocation of 2020 Grand Final tickets to 159 local community clubs in Queensland as a thank you for the state's efforts in supporting football this season.
