Cats TV joined James Kelly and journalist Scott Gullan for Argue the Toss, where they discussed the timing of locking in the best 22.

Kelly believes football has moved beyond sticking with one specific group of players and he sees changes within a group as an important key to success.

He feels the club’s flexibility and ability to rest numerous players when they need to, is more effective than focusing on one set group.

“Ideally you’d like to have it locked down for the final series but even that changes,” Kelly said.

“I think footy has gone passed a set 22 who play every week, I remember seeing Sydney when they won the premiership, their side was unchanged for the last 10 weeks of the year. I think footy has evolved a bit passed that, and as a group we certainly have.”

Geelong’s senior coach, Chris Scott, continues to introduce new young players into the Cats senior list and Gullan believes this process works, especially when it comes to replacing injured players.

“He’s already done 10 this year and I think you just keep them rolling, like Kel said, the more the kids have a taste, we’ve seen it with Christensen, Motlop etc, when they’re needed in a final because of two or three injuries they can do it,” Gullan said.
