Be there to cheer the Cats on as we take on the GWS Giants at GMHBA Stadium this Saturday.
Last Time They Met
Round 7, 2019
Greater Western Sydney 6.5 (41) def Geelong 1.4 (10)
UNSW Canberra Oval
The Giants scored an upset win over the Cats at home to end their season on a high back in 2019.
Olivia Purcell collected 19 disposals in that match, while Maddy McMahon (14) and Meg McDonald (11) were among the best. Renee Garing laid an incredible 14 tackles.
Cats to Keep Your Eye On
Amy McDonald and Becky Webster have been the standouts for the Cats in the midfield in 2021. The pair have taken their games to a new level, and are constant fixtures in the team’s best.
Against the West Coast Eagles last week, McDonald collected a game-high 24 disposals and six tackles, while Webster collected 16 disposals and laid five tackles.
In defence, Meg McDonald has been a stalwart all season, and again put up a fighting effort against the sharpshooting Eagles on Monday.
The Key Points
1) Early goal key: They Cats will be hoping to strike early on the scoreboard to ease pressure against the Giants on Saturday afternoon. The Cats played their best footy against Carlton in Round 6, when Becky Webster had a goal on the board in the opening minutes of the game.
Against the Eagles, the pressure built after both teams went goalless in the first quarter, but the home team found their accuracy in the second quarter and put through four-goals straight to effectively put the contest out of reach for Geelong.
2) Make clearances count: The Cats beat the Eagles 25-21 in the clearance count on the weekend, and there were times where they collected the ball from a hitout, but were thwarted before they could get the ball clear. If the Cats can go the extra step against the Giants, it will go a long way to helping them create opportunities in their attacking half.
3) The last one at home: It hasn’t been the season the Cats hoped for, but they will be trying hard to produce their best and finish on a win in their final game at GMHBA Stadium for the year. It will be a tough challenge against the Giants, but with strong, vocal hometown support, the Cats will be striving to cause the upset.
