Mark Blicavs returned to the Cats defensive unit to great effect against Fremantle, a move that helped the team secure an important win.
Geelong’s utility has spent time in a variety of areas this year including through the middle, in the ruck and on the wing, but was deployed in the backline on Saturday in the absence of Sam De Koning.
Blicavs collected 16 disposals and nine intercept possessions against the Dockers, while also winning two clearances and nine hit-outs.
Blicavs told ABC radio post game that he enjoys having the ability to play in multiple positions, and is happy to spend time wherever the team needs.
“I really enjoy being able to be swung wherever I can to help the coaches out with some of their headaches,” Blicavs said following the win.
“I love playing around the ball, I was a defender today and played as the second ruck to get around the footy.
“I really love those stints to help our rucks out, probably that role is my favourite.”
The Cats moved back into the top four with their win over Fremantle, with games against St Kilda (Marvel Stadium) and West Coast (GMHBA Stadium) to close out the home and away season.
In a tightly contested season, Geelong can still mathematically finish anywhere from first to ninth on the ladder depending on the results over the last two weeks.
Blicavs believes the Cats are in a good position to attack the back end of the season, but the team is still focusing on taking things one week at a time.
“Looking at the ladder there is still a lot of teams that could win the premiership,” Blicavs said.
“We are trying to put it all together at the right time of year, that's the plan.
“We look no further than next week; St Kilda are on a roll and at Marvel Stadium they play really well.
“We just want to put ourselves in a position to be in good form come September, then we can see what happens.
“This win goes a long way towards that, but there is plenty of football left in the last couple of rounds to sort out the top eight.”
