Wells on the Cats Draft Strategy

What we wanted to do, at both the National draft and the Rookie draft, was get a group of players that not only were a bit diverse and had the talent to play at AFL level, but also that complimented what we already had on our list.

We have got a good strong list we believe, plenty of young talent that is still developing and we wanted to get players that could fit into that mix.

Wells on the Cats First Selection, Jay Polkinghorne

Jay is a terrific marking forward.

He played most of his footy as a forward so far, but I would not be surprised at all if he becomes a versatile player and gets up the ground a bit, could possibly play in defence even.

His real strength and AFL quality is marking the ball, particularly in one on one situations and also in packs.

Wells on Geelong's Second Draftee, Jacob Molier

Jacob is a tall player, at 202cm he has spent a little bit of time playing in the ruck for Sturt juniors and also up forward.

We see Jacob as an athletic tall, versatile, a fantastic mark, can get around the ground with great speed and has the skills.

Obviously he will have a lot of development left in him, but I won't be surprised if he ends up being a real acquisition for us.

Wells on Geelong's Final Two Picks in the National Draft

Lenny Hofmann is a half back flanker, Lenny will be a versatile defender we think.

He can really mark the ball, he is a very fast player, he is a great team player and a really good teammate.

He will fit in with our developing young tall's very well.

Keighton Matofai-Forbes is a powerful unit as a forward, I won't be surprised also if he can become a versatile player.

He can kick the ball a long way, he is very strong, a left footer and we feel he deserved his chance as well.

Wells on the Cats Rookie Draft Picks

Having done what we did in the National Draft, we felt we needed to balance it up a little bit with a couple of midfielders.

We were really pleased to give Xavier Ivisic an opportunity. Xavier is a terrific young talent from the Geelong Falcons, played for the Vic Country team this year also. He is a real hunter of the ball and has a great work ethic, so he will fit in well.

Our second pick was Patrick Retschko, a Vic Metro representative from the Oakleigh Chargers. He is a terrific runner, an outstanding junior athlete and he will add to that midfield mix that we have.

With our last pick we selected Joe Pike, a local product who could have easily been picked last year from the Geelong Falcons. He gained some experience with our VFL team, playing in the ruck and as a forward. All the hard work that Joe has done over the last 12 months has paid off, with him getting onto our list today.
