Brandan Parfitt has stamped his name as one to watch for the Cats in 2018 after a best-on-ground performance against the Saints.
Drafted with pick 26 in the 2016 Draft, his debut season started well until a serious hamstring injury derailed his season. He missed 10 weeks but came back to play nine of the final 11 games that season.
His 23 disposal, five tackle game in round three against Melbourne really highlighted why the Cats picked him with their first pick.
Fast forward to round four this year and Parfitt was best-on-ground in the Cats’ 47-point win over St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium.
The 19-year-old’s defensive pressure really shone through, finishing the game with an equal career high seven tackles. His 28-disposal game was second only to Zach Tuohy (29), while he also registered a career best three goals.
It would have come as no surprise to some, given his form in the first three games of the season, where Parfitt has averaged 19 disposals, five tackles and a goal a game.
“It was good to play four quarters of good footy, so I’m pretty happy about that,” said Parfitt.
“I played a little bit more time in the midfield today, which is good, but I’m still playing that higher half forward role, which I enjoy as well.”
“It was unreal to be back at home, all the fans turned out which was good.”
Asked if he set himself to have a four-quarter performance, Parfitt’s response was that he knows that he goes missing a fair bit, but playing in the midfield you are around the ball a little, so gets your mind activated and ready to go.
Parfitt credits his midfield time yesterday to Gary Ablett being out and he hopes that he can stay in there a little bit longer, but still enjoys his forward role.
Geelong travels to Adelaide Oval to meet Port Adelaide on Saturday night, where Parfitt was part of their Aboriginal AFL Academy.
