Kelly turns it on in defence
Cats TV discusses James Kelly's move from the midfield to defence.
On Argue the Toss Cats TV caught up with Hamish McIntosh and Scott Gullan to talk about James Kelly’s role swap into the backline.
The last time Kelly took to the back of the field was in 2009 before resuming to his fort in the midfield. However, this year he has returned to employ his skills on the opposition’s small forwards, as well as making room for young gun Cam Guthrie.
McIntosh says Kelly’s ability to move comfortably into a new role emphasises how versatile and resourceful the Cats players are.
“It just shows the strength of the footy side that guys can come in and play different roles and it means we see more of Cam Guthrie in the midfield now… so it just shows the strength of our side, it’s so flexible and Kel’s a prime example of that,” McIntosh said.
During Monday’s blockbuster Kelly managed to keep the Hawks speedy forward, Cyril Rioli, down to a low seven touches, three marks and one goal. According to Gullan a player as multitalented and accepting as Kelly is a true asset to the club.
“Kel is clearly a great tackler, a clear ball winner, ball magnet when he goes in the middle but he just accepts his role and goes down there and plays on Cyril Rioli and keeps him to seven touches or something,” Gullan said.
