NEWLY re-signed Cat Cam Guthrie says he never considered going anywhere else during free-agency.
Geelong announced yesterday that Guthrie had extended his contract for a further three years while his younger brother Zach had signed on until 2020.
“I was always very, very keen to stay at the Geelong football club,” Guthrie said.
“They’ve been very good to me since I was 18 years old and once I knew that they wanted to sign me, yeah it got done pretty quickly.”
Despite speculation that Guthrie and the club had come to an impasse in negotiations, Guthrie said he never had any doubt he would be wearing the hoops next year.
“There were a few different things that were reported that I didn’t think were quite accurate. I guess as a part of a negotiation there is a bit of back and forth but that was all quite healthy in the reports that I got back from my management.”
“In the end we hit a sweet spot and it was done which was great.”
The 25-year-old Cat will now turn his attentions to making an AFL comeback after undergoing ankle surgery following round three against West Coast.
“I probably think the initial diagnosis and whether to operate or not is always the tricky one. The physios and doctors got together and they were pretty keen to operate straight away,” Guthrie said.
“I’ve played a couple games now in the VFL since my ankle injury and we play the Bulldogs after the bye and I think I’ll be up for selection."
Barring any setbacks, Guthrie’s recall is now in the hands of the coaches.
“Two months is a long time, so a lot of things happen during that period and we’ve been playing some great footy,” he said.
“We’re gelling pretty well at the moment so it’s not really about the team fitting around me it’s me coming back and fitting around what the team requires of myself.
“It just depends on whether the coaches want me back in the team and whether they think I’ll contribute enough.”
