Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield has now polled the second most votes in Brownlow history, after passing AFL legend Gary Dempsey on Monday night.

Dangerfield received 12 votes for the 2023 season, taking him to a total of 248 across his career which surpassed Dempsey’s 246 career votes.

The 33 year old now sits just 14 adrift of the all time votes leader, Geelong legend Gary Ablett Jr. who polled 262 votes across his incredible 332 game career.

The Cats skipper polled his 54th three vote game in round 17 this season, amassing 26 disposals and nine clearances in a 62 point win over North Melbourne.

The performance moved the star on-baller within one three vote game of the all time record, unsurprisingly also held by Gary Ablett.

Dangerfield is no stranger to success on Brownlow night, taking out the award in 2016 after a brilliant season saw him poll 35 votes, nine clear of second place.

This Brownlow night was slightly different for the Geelong captain, who told SEN on Monday night that he is already back into pre season training with the focus shifting to 2024.

"We have been on a nice break for a little while, I actually started my pre season training this week,” Dangerfield told SEN.

“No season is ever a failure because you always learn from it, but you always play for this time of year.

"Last year we finally understood and realised what it is like to achieve what every team sets out to do every year.

"It's not until you experience that feeling of utopia, and it is as great as what every player says it is.”
